Olly Smith in The Daily Mail, 13/12/15: "With Star Wars coming soon, this is white wine’s answer to a lightsaber: cutting, dazzling, charged and thrillingly intense."

From the maker of Dr. Loosen, this is crisp and balanced with delicate flavours of peach and nectarine, wrapped in a cool mineral cloak.

In 1996, Ernst Loosen took on the ownership of the beautiful Villa Wolf estate. The wines are made in the classic style of the Pfalz; dry, with pure flavours and a moderate alcohol. The Pfalz region lies between the Haardt Mountains and the Rhine River, directly north of France’s Alsace region. As in Alsace, the mountains protect the area from harsh Atlantic weather, making it one of the warmer and drier areas of Germany. In this climate, achieving full ripeness is possible in nearly every vintage. Today, talented winemakers Patrick Moellendorf and Sumi Gebauer run the winery, a role which they have taken on with great fervour. They trained under the watchful gaze of Ernst Loosen for seven years and now have complete responsibility for the vineyards and winemaking.

To preserve the naturally high quality of the vineyards, the winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture, gentle handling during harvest and traditional techniques in the cellar. This enables Patrick and Sumi to produce pure, mineral-inflected wines that express the authentic terroir of the Pfalz.

The grapes are crushed and sent straight to the tank for settling, before fermentation with neutral cultured yeasts in temperature-controlled steel tanks. This is followed by a few months on the fine lees to add a gentle creaminess to the texture and integrate the natural acidity of Riesling.

Villa Wolf Riesling is made in the traditional dry style of the Pfalz region. It is medium-bodied and has a lovely purity of peach fruit, with a classic minerally structure. Nicely balanced acidity gives it a juicy grip. It is an excellent match for classic continental-style cooking, especially with dishes that feature freshwater fish, chicken and sushi.

The New 'Kids' on The German Block - Mixed Case of 6 Wines

Our Master of Wine, Ana has recently discovered that German wines is not all about Riesling and sausages (although that is still very much key). Recently, a fresh batch of young winemakers have been travelling the world, bringing international grape varieties back to Germany and doing it their way.

A Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay? Really? Well, yes. “It would usually go against my principles to have yet another one of these varieties in the range, but I honestly could not resist these!”, says Ana. Re-discover the wines of Germany, get down with the new kids on the block and explore these daring, yet traditional German wines.
