The Oddbins Take

Alta means ‘high’ in Spanish and, while this may actually refer to the higher aspect of La Rioja Alta, it is also very ‘alta’ in our estimation. We are head over heels in love with its classic, mellow Rioja characteristics of coconut, vanilla, hazelnut and chocolate. In fact, we’d say it’s so ‘alta’ it’s like drifting off on a silky, enveloping cloud of warm flavours, drifting towards the hills of Rioja. Aaaaand relax.

On July 10, 1890, five Basque and Rioja-based vine growers created ‘Sociedad Vinicola de la Rioja Alta’ in what is known as the Haro Station District. This was the beginning of a fascinating business venture in which the only dream of the five founders was to craft and age high quality wines. Mr Vigier, a French expert, was hired as technical manager and we were soon familiar with what is now known as ‘classic’ production. The company changed its name to "La Rioja Alta" in 1891.

Structured and well balanced palate, it has marvellously silky tannins. A pleasant, sophisticated aftertaste fills the mouth with seemingly never-ending sensations, which time can only improve. It is especially suitable for roast lamb and well-cured cheeses."
