Islay Malt Whisky

Islay is well known for its peaty single malt whiskies, with world famous distilleries Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin on the south coast producing some exceptional peaty whiskies. However it’s not all peaty drams, there are a selection of fruitier single malts such as the Bunnabhain distillery which sits on the north of the island. Other well-known distilleries are the Bruichladdich and Caol Ila distilleries which offer more subtle levels of peat than the traditional Islay malt.

The wild, Atlantic-facing coast of Islay was the inspiration behind this third release of Bruichladdich's Barley series. The grain was grown for Bruichladdich in the Minister's Field at Rockside Farm. A very slow distillation gently coaxed the delicate oils and flavour compounds from the barley and, coupled with the use of casks that specially selected to preserve those flavours, the result is a whisky of exceptional complexity and a sense of place. Honed, muscular and lithe, the maltiness of the barley is very much at the fore.

This whisky has a lightness of touch, an elegance, almost a femininity, but under no circumstances should it be underestimated. Alter Ego: Boudica; like the queen of ancient Britain who led a rebellion against the Romans, Caol Ila is beautiful yet prickly, rebellious, unpredictable, challenging, very much of the countryside, fiercely proud of its heritage and not afraid to stand up to the big boys. Caol Ila is a grower, but perseverance will be greatly rewarded.

Deep and full bodied, with aromas of toffee and caramel, caused by the vanilla and tannins of the American oak, this is a complex whisky that provides smoky flavours accompanied by a surprising yet gentle sweetness. The long finish offers smoke and spice as it dries on the palate.
