REGION

You may have noticed, if you’ve ever scrutinised a selection of Scotch Whisky, that they tend to be divided into Regions, 5 of them to be precise. Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown, sorry Islands; you are an unrecognised sub-region so don’t appear in this list but by gum we’re rooting for your identification. Regional labelling can be rather useful to help choose your next dram, although there are oddballs coming out of every region, a good rule of thumb is; if you like peaty whiskies, go for a nice Islay or Campbeltown. Distilleries such as Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Springbank hail from here. If you prefer a smoother, nuttier style look no further than whiskies such as Glenfarclas and Glenkinchie that come from Speyside and the Lowlands respectively. Prefer a whisky more in the middle? Highlands the region for you, whiskies like Oban, balance peat with an easier drinking style. Simple, right? We knew the Scots were a sensible bunch.

AnCnoc Cutter - Highland Single Malt Whisky

    £55.00

    £55.00

This whisky takes its name from the hand tool used to cut peat from less wet, shallower bogs. This means the peat it reveals is drier and therefore more easily burnt producing a whisky that has a medium-heavy smokiness. Pale yellow in appearance, the nose has an initially thick and oily smoke structure, reveals a sharper, more medicinal phenolic layer, a piercing burst of fruitiness and an intense finish. The nose is intense and unforgettable. On the palate, leather and spicy vanilla abound, together with notes of pink grapefruit and ripe orchard fruits. A kaleidoscope of spicy and peaty notes culminate with a juicy burst and call for another sip.

The wild, Atlantic-facing coast of Islay was the inspiration behind this third release of Bruichladdich's Barley series. The grain was grown for Bruichladdich in the Minister's Field at Rockside Farm. A very slow distillation gently coaxed the delicate oils and flavour compounds from the barley and, coupled with the use of casks that specially selected to preserve those flavours, the result is a whisky of exceptional complexity and a sense of place. Honed, muscular and lithe, the maltiness of the barley is very much at the fore.
