Scotch Whisky

Sit yourself down with a Robert Burns poem, chop yourself off a nice chunk of Haggis and pour yourself a wee dram because we’re talking Scotch, right about now! Was that offensive? It felt like it might be offensive, if we we’re being reductive we apologise, we’re rather excited is all. Whisky has been distilled in Scotland since around the late 15th Century, well done Scotch, you’ve been around longer than the work of William Shakespeare. However, it wasn’t until the 19th Century that Scotch’s popularity became widespread. Firstly, in 1831 with the introduction of the column still, making whisky less expensive to produce and smoother. Secondly, due to phylloxera wiping out the Brandy industry in France, in the 1880s. “Take that Cognac, not so high and mighty now are you!” … Ahum, it was a terrible time for grape producing countries and their people. The point being, after this, those Victorian folks loved Scotch more than being polite, Charles Dickins and smog combined. Since then, Scotch has become one of the most sought after products in the drink industry from simple Blended Whisky to super premium age-dated Single Malt, great work Scotland!
