Alain Gardier, an energetic 60-plus winemaker, is well-known in France and respected for his talents as a master blender. He has teamed up with Oddbins to make the Wine Not War Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from which £1 of every sale will go to War Child. Founded in 1993, War Child offers rehabilitation, security and support to children whose lives have been devastated by war, worldwide.
The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats for 18 days, whilst being pressed and pumped-over. To preserve freshness and fruit, the wine spends no time in oak and eight months in concrete tanks.
It boasts impressive aromas of rich black fruit, toasted bread and a twist of liquorice. This evolves into intense, fresh crushed black/blueberries and spice on the palate, with supple tannins giving the wine a lovely roundness. Wild herbs and a touch of meatiness give it complexity.
