Sangiovese

Sangiovese translates as ‘the blood of Jove’ and Jove is another word for Jupiter (bear with us...) and Jupiter was the head of the Roman Gods, who fired bolts of thunder from the sky. This is all, we think, apt: Sangiovese is the principle operator on the Italian wine scene, notably featuring in wines like Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano. Does it have lovers? Hello! It’s the head of the Gods; it does what it likes, and it generally likes Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo Nero, Mammolo and dozens more. When it’s young, it’s playful, with fresh flavours of mulberries and cherries but when it’s had age, it changes its form entirely, becoming savoury, oaky and leathery and, basically, God-like.
