Like its name, Gewurtztraminer is a strange and exotic character. Decidedly feminine and exuding the most marvellous lychee and rose-petal perfume, Gewurtz is an aristocratic German émigré, now residing principally in the Alsace. Here, the cool, gently sloping hills are the perfect haven for this refined, sensitive soul, who doesn’t favour hot climates. She does enjoy herself in parts of Germany and Austria and, if she takes her parasol and smelling salts, she can even enjoy places like Australia’s Clare Valley. Although Gewurtz is by and large a singleton, she sometimes enjoys a dalliance with the more mildly aromatic Muscat.
