Wines From The Bordeaux Region

Bordeaux is massive; it produces more wine that the whole of Australia put together. In your face New World. These incredible wines, predominantly red blends using Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, have survived wars, recessions, scandals and disease and have influenced winemaking from Lebanon to China and from South Africa to the Americas. Although the region has a reputation for being stuck in its ways, things are changing...

Recently the climate in Bordeaux has been getting warmer (imagine being able to say that about good ol’ Blighty), so much so that winemakers have started reintroducing heat-loving grape varieties like Carménère, one they’d almost forgotten about. With warmer conditions, “Great vintages” are becoming more common and the wines more reliable. The fact that they are blends also helps; each grape variety has different strengths and weaknesses and responds to the climate differently. So even if the year isn’t perfect, a skilful winemaker can adjust the blend to get the best out of his wine. All this means that you don’t need to worry about vintages as much these days. Be reassured because we’ve also got your back, if wines aren’t great, we won’t stock them.

Bordeaux is a region of polar opposites. Wealthy châteaux can employ modern technology, trade globally (increasingly in Asia) and innovate. Last Christmas we brought in a parcel of wine from Rauzan-Ségla (owned by the brothers who own Chanel) bottled under screwcap, and it was outrageously good. At the other end of the scale, tiny family-owned vineyards run at almost subsistence level, using only very old-fashioned methods. Our range runs the gamut from the little, traditional gems to the game-changing big-boys, but our focus always remains value for money.

Only 10% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is white (usually made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc) and you rarely hear about them, but we love them and think they’re seriously underrated. So if you’re looking for a change from intense, fruity New World whites, try exploring Bordeaux’s best-kept secret.
