Burgundy Wines

The wonderful thing about Burgundy is that, despite fusty appearances, it’s one of the most dynamic wine regions around; guaranteed to surprise, year in, year out. There are two factors at play here, the first of which is the weather. Burgundy has short-ish summers, chilly winters, spring frosts and hail. This hazardous weather can be very localised, meaning one vineyard can be severely damaged, while a few miles away another winemaker can have a great year. Although this can make yields unpredictable, the quality is never in question. Plus, we’re watching out for you, so we’ll only stock great wines.

The second factor is their inheritance laws, which mean that vineyards are divided equally between the owner’s children. So, when a winery owner in Burgundy dies, vineyards may be passed to any number of children with very different views on how it should be run. This means that, with every generation, Burgundy receives a regular shake up.

The reds, made from Pinot Noir, are perennially popular in both the traditional, oaky styles and the more modern, fruit-driven styles. But white Burgundy sells particularly well at Oddbins. You guys love it. Which means that you love Chardonnay! “Who? Me? But I can’t stand it!” *Grinning like a Cheshire Cat* “Yup! White Burgundy IS Chardonnay. Chablis? Chardonnay. Maçon? Chardonnay. Pouilly-Fuissé? Chardonnay! Apologies if this is not news to you, but we’re sure you share our good-natured mirth…

So, who are the ones to watch? Well, producers Albert Bichot and Verget are two of our favourites, because they are über-exciting and reliably good-value. The former has teamed up with the sommelier from the Michelin-starred Restaurant Bernard Loiseau, to create wines named after the restaurant’s famous founder and they are special creations indeed. Keep an eye out because these are coming soon.
