The Oddbins Take

This rich, energetic red testifies to just how smart the Yalumba crew are at making wine. But describing those wines is quite another skill. They were stumped when it came to labels. Until one morning they found handwritten notes pinned to the barrels, with beautiful descriptions of the wines inside.

Extraordinary! The notes were spot on, and lyrical too. Only when their astonishment wore off did they realise the notes were written with Cabernet Sauvignon! The Scribbler had been filling his fountain pen from a particularly good barrel. A small price for such poetry. And to acknowledge the anonymous scribe, they bottle that barrel under his winery nickname now, every year.

Yalumba ‘The Scribbler’ is a youthful embodiment of its older sibling ‘The Signature’, sharing the same bloodline and winemaking expertise. It showcases the Barossa as an elegant, complex and bright wine.

Kevin Glastonbury, winemaker at Yalumba, began his winemaking career as soon as he finished school and after several years of hard work, experimentation and innovation he joined the winery 1999. Kevin takes a hands-on approach to his winemaking and, having grown up in the region, his extensive knowledge of the Barossa has helped him continue his innovations as Senior Red Winemaker for Yalumba.

’The Scribbler’ opens with floral and red compote berry notes. It boasts coastal aromas and the fresh palate has a line of fruit running throughout with slight hints of cool mint. This red wine is energetic and finishes with a mouth coating of powdery tannin.

We love Australian wine. Fact. So, we’ve selected two of our favourites from Australia’s oldest family-owned winery for this case to show you exactly how good their wine can be. The refreshing Viognier rains apricot, honeysuckle and orange down onto your palate, whereas ‘The Scribbler’ is a rich and smooth blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz boasting flavours of red berry compote.
