Sip into Spain: A Wine-ding Road Through the World of Spanish Wine

Ah, Spanish wines, where do we even begin? With over 2.9 million acres of vineyards and more than 400 grape varieties planted throughout the country, it's safe to say that Spain is a wine lover's paradise. Spanish wine is divided into several regions, each with its own unique winemaking traditions and grape varieties. Rioja is one of the most famous of these regions, located in the north of Spain, and known for producing some of the country's best red wines. The region is further divided into three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja, and Rioja Alavesa, each with its own distinct microclimate and terroir. Our La Rioja Alta Discovery Box is the perfect expression of wines produced in this region.

Rioja wines are made primarily from the Tempranillo grape, which accounts for around 75% of the vineyard plantings in the region. Tempranillo is a thick-skinned grape that produces wines with high levels of tannins and acidity, as well as complex aromas of berries, tobacco, and vanilla. Rioja wines can be aged in oak barrels for varying periods, depending on the style of the wine. Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva are the three main categories of Rioja wines, with each requiring a specific minimum aging period.

Crianza wines are aged for a minimum of one year in oak barrels and one year in the bottle, while Reserva wines are aged for a minimum of one year in oak barrels and two years in the bottle. Gran Reserva wines are aged for a minimum of two years in oak barrels and three years in the bottle. The longer the wine is aged, the more complex the flavours become, making Rioja wines some of the most sought-after and expensive in the world.

So, Tempranillo, the grape variety that is the star of Rioja wines. Tempranillo is Spain's most widely planted red grape variety, and it's grown in almost every wine region in the country. The grape is known for producing wines with bright acidity, juicy red fruit flavours, and a slightly spicy finish. Tempranillo wines can be made in a variety of styles, from fresh and fruity to rich and complex. In addition to Rioja, other regions where Tempranillo is grown include Ribera del Duero, Toro, and La Mancha. Each of these regions produces wines with unique characteristics that are influenced by the local terroir, climate, and winemaking traditions. Tempranillo wines from Ribera del Duero are known for their bold, powerful flavours, while those from Toro are more rustic and full-bodied. Here are two of our favourite Tempranillo based wines:

Albariño is a white grape variety that is grown primarily in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. Albariño wines are known for their crisp acidity, bright citrus flavours, and hints of minerality. The grape is grown in a cool, rainy climate, which gives the wines their distinct freshness and vibrancy. Albariño wines are typically unoaked, and they are meant to be enjoyed young and fresh. The wines pair well with seafood dishes, such as grilled prawns or baked cod, as well as with lighter pasta dishes and salads. Albariño has become increasingly popular in recent years, with more and more winemakers in Spain and around the world planting the grape and producing high-quality wines.
