CHARDONNAY

Chardonnay is possibly the most flexible grape in the whole of the viticultural world. In fact, before Chardonnay matured, settling down in Burgundy and Champagne, it was a renowned French gymnast, pummel horsing its way across international wine competitions.

Chardonnay can be clean and citrusy or voluptuous and buttery and is of course legendary in sparkling wine. Usually found in Champagne blends, however it can appear as a single-varietal labelled as Blanc de Blancs. This style of Champagne is highly coveted and are some of the finest expressions of the region such as Dom Ruinart & Taittinger Comtes. Most Chardonnay in Champagne is grown in the Cote de Blanc with 95% of the plantings in this region being of Chardonnay. It is not exclusive to Champagne however Chardonnay appears in wonderful sparkling wine from Chile to Australia and can even be found flourishing on these fickle isles. It seems to help being flexible, if you’re an international jet setter… Suppose the leg room on planes isn’t such an issue.
