Catalonia, the home of Barcelona football club, that brown pointy Cathedral, that Gaudi didn’t finish and Cava! Catalan sparkling wine was first made in around 1851, although the roots of the cava industry can be traced back to Josep Raventós's travels through Europe in the 1860s, where he was promoting the still wines of the Codorníu Winery. His visits to Champagne inspired the idea for sparkling Catalonian wine. The wine is made from a blend of Macabeau, Parelleda and Xarel-lo grapes and must be made in the same method as Champagne. The sparkling wines of Catalonia, therefore, offer Champagne style wines at an excellent price.
