The Oddbins Take

The birth of punk and rock '’ roll is rooted in young people experimenting with their garage band (musically experimenting, we have no idea what they were doing in their personal life). The Beatles took their raw, revolutionary sound from the garage to the Cavern Club, while Iggy Pop honed his skills in Detroit garage bands before evolving into the self-mutilating car insurance salesman we know and love today.

For this and many other reasons, the comparison between winemaker Jonathan Maltus and a 20th century rock star is a valid one. Jonathan, like so many notable musicians learnt his craft in garages, taking full advantage of the freedom to experiment afforded when you're not on the main stage. He challenged the conventional Bordeaux style, making tiny amounts of quality wine, focused on fruit purity and intensity as opposed to austere and savoury Bordeauxs that were classic for the time.

Today, Maltus is one of the big winemaking names across the globe, however Chateau Vieil Hermitage illustrates that he hasn't lost his rock n' roll spirit; busting with plush dark plum, blackcurrant and liquorice characters harmonising on a bed of silky smooth tannins, this wine will thrash out a chord and immediately enthral its audience.
