The Oddbins Take

There are very few winemakers that are household names, perhaps because there are no vintner talent shows on ITV, where audience members high on schadenfreude can fervently watch Simon Cowell spit out some aspiring winemaker’s Sauvignon. Vintner bootcamp would be a blast though…

We hope that by the end of this tasting note you will know the name Mike Grgich, for he is a true winemaking icon. Mike first gained notoriety for his role at Californian estate Chateau Montelena, who’s 1973 vintage bested all French counterparts at the now infamous Judgment of Paris.

This early success allowed Mike to launch his own label with business partner Austin Hills - Grgich Hills Estate. 40 years on, Grgich Hills are one of the most admired wineries in Napa, producing exceptional quality wines such as this Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend, rich and full-bodied with a succulent palate of blackcurrant, bramble, cassis, dried violet, mint leaf, tobacco and leather. Let’s hope Mike gets a call up for Strictly Come Dancing and becomes the household name his contribution to the wine industry deserves!
