The Oddbins Take

Surely one of the greatest indicators that you’ve mastered your field of work or research is being bestowed a nickname after it, like Beckham being Golden Balls because he’s so good at balls. The Riddler named the Riddler because he can smash out a cryptic crossword like nobody’s business.

The most notable example however is Ken Forrester. In 1993, the South African wine trade wasn’t in the best shape, particularly its flagship white grape Chenin Blanc which was often over oxidised, over extracted and over oaked. Then along came Ken Forrester, dedicated to make Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc that could compete with any white wine in the world. 25 years on we can comfortably say he achieved this, when sipping on this wonderfully rich yet nuanced wine, with expressions of white peach, fresh pear and honeysuckle with a long flinty finish, it’s clear Ken has earned his nickname – Mr Chenin!
