The Oddbins Take

It was dear-old Sir Isaac Newton, while desperately scrambling to grab a Granny Smith that was recalcitrantly floating off in the direction of Neptune, that thought it would be great if stuff stayed on Earth and thus invented gravity.

It’s been terribly useful, both in the base-jumping community and among young trail-blazing winemakers. For with the most innovative, gravity-fed wineries are all the rage. Producers such as Lechburg, design their wineries over several floors, so grapes and must is moved purely by gravity, with no need for pumps or conveyor belts, allowing wine to be moved around much more gently. This is highly advantageous as too much force during vinification can result in wines that are over-extracted and over-tannic, losing nuance and aromatics. Not to mention, less machines means a smaller ‘carbon footprint!’

Sounds pretty great, right? And that’s before you’ve even experienced the powerful aromatic profile of this Gewürztraminer with a full-body and rounded palate of lychee, tropical fruit, bergamot peel and saffron. God bless you Sir Isaac!

Some people have a misconception that white wine is somehow less serious than their red cousins. Which is of course nonsense; just as with reds, there are white wines that age almost indefinitely, have overwhelming complexity and are so distinct that you recognise them long before your lips have touched the glass. In fact, some whites are so serious we forgo a traditional tasting note and merely post the monocle-man emoji! In this case of 6, you’ll find some of the most well-known grape varieties and styles the white wine world has to offer!
