The Oddbins Take

Some believe a divining rod is about finding sources of water, after all, there was a disappointing Russell Crowe movie all about it. Studios love him in a period piece ay? It seems ever since Gladiator, anytime they need a rugged male protagonist born in 17th Century Paris, who inexplicitly has a Kiwi accent, they turn to Russell Crowe! But we digress

In Alsace they use divining rods for a very different reason, locating and identifying the noblest of grapes. Passing the rod along the vines, the grain of the wood will point to the grapes that have been raisined by botrytis, concentrating sugars, acidity and flavour. In Alsace they call this process Selection de Grains Nobles. It results in one of the most highly prized wine styles in the world and when tasting this lusciously sweet dessert wine balanced by zippy acidity and a powerful palate of citrus fruit, honey, blossom and a complex mineral finish, it’s easy to see why.

(Some of this tasting note was fictional… We’re hoping Russell Crowe will play himself in the movie!)
