The Oddbins Take

One of the hardest things about being brilliant is the pressure to follow on with something equally impressive. Look at the curse of second book syndrome; Mathilda by Mary Shelly is probably quite good but as it isn't Frankenstein 'probably quite good' is the best review it's received in 200 years. Imagine, then, maintaining the highest quality through multiple editions. That's exactly what Pol Roger have succeeded in doing. Surely, with each great vintage they must wonder "how can we match this magnificent wine again?" Yet any worries, we imagine, would have been instantly allayed when they sampled the 2009...

The latest edition of the Pol Roger repertoire is delicately pale lemon in colour. The nose is opulent in its youth displaying ripe stone fruits on the nose, candied lemon peel and grapefruit. Creamy autolytic mouth-feel with a refreshing backbone of acidity. The wine has a persistence of length and character. 160 years of winemaking without one Mathilda (shh, you know what we mean).
