Apostrophe Larry Cherubino 'Possessive' Red Blend 2014
£13.00
You can be complex yet still approachable. Look at Living in The Past by Jethro Tull, a record so wonderfully catchy that you'd never notice its complex 5/4 time signature. Look at Stephen Fry, his mind constantly whirling about like an orrery while he's one of the most popular chaps on television.
And look at this wine, three grapes that bounce off each other's differing personalities like an old Beatles interview, with heavy Shiraz lifting musky Grenache, which softens the Mataro which sharpens the Shiraz which... and so on, like an Escher staircase.
Suffice it to say that all this activity need not even momentarily distract you from what is a thoroughly delicious, complex and approachable modern red wine. Hats off to Larry!
Larry Cherubino Wines was established in 2005, following the purchase of his first land, a small parcel in Riversdale, in 2004. It was the culmination of several decades of work and experience throughout Australia and across many of the finest wine-producing regions of the world. Larry's first release was in 2005, made in his spare room. After that, his business grew and the awards flooded in, and Larry is currently in the process of propagating a number of clones new to the Great Southern region. He believes very firmly in spending time in the vineyard, paying attention to canopy and water management and ensuring absolute precision with picking times, while keeping intervention in the winery to a minimum.
The first vines grown on the banks of the Frankland River were planted in 1875, by the ancestors of Larry Cherubino's wife. Winemaking in Western Australia began in earnest with the Houghton winery the better part of 200 years ago, although it wasn't until the 1950s that the area's potential was noted, and even then excitement in the area didn't really ignite until the 1980s. Today Western Australian wine accounts for only about 5% of Australia's total output, but its quality puts it among the country's upper echelons
This has a very modern and complex style, with the heavy earthiness of the Shiraz balancing the muskiness of the Grenache, which in turn takes the edge of the steeliness of the Mataro. The fruit was hand picked, fermented to a moderate extraction to maintain the character of the vineyard, and aged for six to eight months in new and one year old oak.
