Disclaimer: this wine has a story of an ‘adult’ (albeit historic) nature… In the Book of Tobias, an ancient Hebrew text, Asmodeus is the Demon of Lust. It is said that when Cain killed Abel, Adam and Eve separated for 130 years. During this time, Adam was tempted by Naamah and Lillith, two demons of prostitution. Asmodeus is the offspring of the relationship between Naamah and Adam.

Of all of the varietals of Italy, Nero d’Avola is as lustful and pleasurable as it gets, hence this delectable red wine was named after Asmodeus. Rich, peppery and opulent, it has many of the same characteristics of Syrah and is arguably the most important grapes in Sicily. That wasn’t too rude, was it?

Poggio Anima is a joint venture between Brunello di Montalcino producer Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie and his importer Vine Street Imports. Their aim is to source grapes from vineyards they have existing relationships with and create wine with a real sense of place. Poggio Anima translates as ‘Hill of Soul’, which they want to capture the ‘soul’ of each vineyard and grape, with no manipulation, at an affordable, ‘everyday’ price.

The vineyards are in the Salemi area of western Sicily, about 25 miles from Marsala. They are planted facing east, following the vertical trellis system on sandy and clay-rich soil, using guyot pruning. The vineyards are at an altitude of around 1,600 feet and the vines are about 15 years old.

Until the 1980s, commercial use of Nero d'Avola was dedicated almost exclusively to fortifying weaker red wines in France and northern Italy. In the past Nero d'Avola, like other Sicilian reds, was often syrupy, with an alcohol content reaching 18%. New viticulture techniques and night harvesting – placing the grapes in cooled vats to prevent premature fermentation – have been used by a few vintners to retain flavour without producing an overpowering wine. The result is often compared to Syrah.

The vineyard is located near Trapani at about 1,100 feet above sea level. The altitude, together with the proximity to the sea, provides for excellent diurnal variety where the warm Sicilian sun is alternated with fresh, cool evenings, ensuring great conditions for ripening the grapes. The vines are planted south-facing following the vertical trellis system on volcanic sand and clay rich soil intermixed, using guyot pruning.

Cherry cola, sweet spices, vanilla scented blackberry preserves and flowers meld together in the glass. Varietal aromas and flavours take a bit of a back seat in this racy red. Sweet violet notes and the spicy and plummy Nero d'Avola character really shows itself on the finish.
