There was a time when Portuguese vintners were seen as a bit like the Amish of the wine world. Not that they thought humans had the perfect amount of technology between 1835-1850 and thus scandalised by the paperclip. No, Portuguese winemaking was fairly isolated from the rest of Europe, their grape varieties distinct with very few mixing with foreign grape varieties.
However, in recent years some blends of high-quality Portuguese grapes and internationally popular varieties have emerged and the effect has been as exciting as Kevin Bacon turning up in that Footloose town. Azoi from Lisboa is such a blend; a healthy splash of the Tinta Roriz is backed up French varietals Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon and the result is wonderful. A ripe and silky smooth red with an enticing flavour profile of blackcurrant, red cherry, raspberry and a hint of leather and tobacco.
The Azoi Lisboa 2020 is a first-class, great value Portuguese red wine, the perfect great value red wine for any wine lover.
