Which must make Madeira one of the unluckiest wine regions in the world! So little of it is made that there is only around 150ha on the island under vine (about the same as a medium-sized Bordeaux Chateau) yet is one of the most unique and luxurious wine styles in the world. However, Madeiran wine is still incrediably affordable.
We may not have a motivational Instagram account but if we did, we’d probably tell you to sample the Barbieto Malvasia Reserva, lusciously sweet yet balanced by piercing acidity, this fortified wine has succulent flavours of caramel, toasted almonds, fig and a touch of smoke. Buying this wine may not make you a millionaire but sharing it will certainly make you friends!
