The Bénédictine Master Distiller puts a mixture of plants and spices into four preparations, which are infused in super-fine alcohol and then distilled or double-distilled in unique hammered copper stills, which date back to Alexandre le Grand's time. The four resulting 'Esprits' then age for three months in oak casks, blended together and rested for eight months in a large oak barrel. Honey and an infusion of saffron are added and the final blend is then heated to 55°C, before being aged in large oak barrels for four months.
Developed by the merchant Alexandre Le Grand in the 19th century, the recipe has remained a closely-guarded secret to this day.
