Alvaro Palacios is a bit of a legend when it comes to the Spanish wine making game. Alongside other infuriatingly gifted winemakers, he made Priorat a region of such quality, it now rivals Rioja to be the jewel, in the crown of Spanish wine. He then turned his attention to the Mencia grape and the region of Bierzo. Very much like a struggling inner-city school, those grapes had heaps of potential, yet spent most of the time trying to cop of with Graciano behind the bike-sheds. Palacios, with his years of experience, changed those grapes lives and it wasn't long before they were standing on the desks shouting, "my captain, my captain!" Today we can enjoy his toil, we always believed in you!

During the late 1980's, Alvaro Palacios travelled his native Spain selling French barriques to winemakers. But his journeys had a second purpose: to find the best place to achieve his goal of making Spain’s greatest wine. In 1990, he decided on Priorat but with a close contender being Bierzo. It had all the things he was looking for, incredibly steep hillside vineyards, distinctive terroir and, most importantly, ancient vineyards of Mencia - a unique red grape believed to have been brought by French pilgrims during the Middle Ages. The pursuit of the dream: The idea of making exceptional wine, from old-vine Mencia, never left Alvaro and his experiences in Priorat convinced him of the enormous potential in Bierzo. Along with his nephew, Ricardo Perez, he set out to find the regions finest old vine Mencia plots. They found a plot in a small town called Corullon; beginning in 2001, the wines produced on this estate have continue to grow in prestige. The winery is dedicated to Alvaro's father, Ricardo's grandfather, who passed away in early 2000. The wines are a worthy tribute to the man who inspired them.
