Bodegas Roda 'Sela' Rioja Reserva Tempranillo 2019
£24.00
Why are there dandelions on the label? A fine question! Apparently, during the spring in Rioja, children would pick dandelions, blow off the fluffy things and wish for a good vintage. When winemaker, Augustin Santolaya tasted Sela's bright, fruit flavours and lively palate, he knew the wish had come true. Hang on, blowing dandelions tells the time, it doesn't grant wishes, this story is an absolute fallacy. O well, children shouldn't be involved in the production of wine anyway, even if it is just wish based. It's not a fallacy that this wine is magnificent, however, subtle use of oak delivers a well-balanced and modern style of Rioja; all without the help of dandelions, impressive!
At the vanguard of the modern Rioja movement, Bodegas Roda was developed in the late 1980s. From the heart of the Haro, overlooking the Ebro River, Roda fuses tradition and modernity with its 19th century cellar and 21st century Bodega. Through meticulous and exacting research, Roda have perfected the art of Tempranillo, selecting only 20 individual clones to cultivate from over 552 identified. Head winemaker Agustin Santolaya, uses bush vines of between 15 and 30 years old. The wine is dominated by Tempranillo but has a touch of Graciano. Yields are kept low to encourage phenolic maturity, which results in a concentration of intense aromas and depth of flavour complexity on the palate. Following 19 days of maceration, Sela is aged for 12 months in 100% semi-new French oak. This delivers a much more modern style of Rioja; fruit lead, with well-integrated and subtle oak.
