Cave de Fleurie Beaujolais 2017
£13.50
When the people of Fleurie want good, powerful and complex wine there is only one place they will go: Cave de Fleurie. Former home of the legendary 'Queen of Beaujolais' Marguerite Chabert, the winery is ground-breaking not only for having the first female president of a cooperative winery in France but their innovation reflects in their incredible wines.
With a personality as formidable as Marguerite herself, this red wine is certainly one to be reckoned with. Garnet reflections on a deep purple colour draw the eye whilst the nose is treated to notes of compote red fruits with hints of spice and fleshy, silky tannins accompany a warming and rounded palate.
The Cave de Fleurie winery dates back to the First World War. During the war the women of the village tended to the vines whilst the men were fighting on the front lines. The cooperative spirit between the women led to the formal establishment of the cooperative in 1927. The winery has long received recognition for its high quality wines and has a rich history within the industry. In 1946 Marguerite Chabert took the reigns of the Cave de Fleurie, becoming the first female president of a wine cooperative in France. Known as 'The Queen of Beaujolais', her strong personality and outspokenness allowed her to assert and impose her ideas in an essentially masculine environment and she remained president for nearly 40 years, leaving the role in 1984. To this day Marguerite remains a key figure in the history of the winery, where two cuvées now bear her name in honor of the tenacious lady.
With a deep purple robe and garnet reflections this is a complex red wine that presents harmonious aromas of compote red fruits and fresh spice. The palate is warm and robust with fleshy and silky tannins and a rounded mouth feel.
