Made under the strict supervision of the Rabbi of Barcelona, this Garnacha-heavy blend from Celler de Capcanes sets the bar somewhat for kosher wines. It is packed full of juicy red and black berry flavors with an appealing earthy, toastiness on the finish.

All we’re saying is, if this is the quality that you get when supervised by the Rabbi of Barcelona then we propose Rabbi supervision of all wines. Of course, a lot of talent and experience from the winemakers at Celler de Capçanes probably helped too.

A lot of talent and knowledge has gone in to making this unique Garnacha blend. Celler Capcanes, situatied 100 miles south-west of Barcelona, with hundereds of years of experience, are leading the way for Kosher wine making.

Before the Phylloxera out-break in the 19th Century, Capcanes grew vast amounts of vines but, as you might imagine, only 20% of those vines were replanted after the attack. In 1933, Capcanes was re-established as a co-operative with five families coming together to produce large quantities of wine to be sold at competitive prices. In 1995, they were approached by the Jewish community of Barcelona to make a Kosher wine; this meant that they would need all new equipment in order to vinify under "Lo Mebushal" conditions. Produced from small parcels of high quality fruit, it was a huge success and paved the way for more wines of this standard, not only Kosher. In 1998, it was decided that all of the villages grapes would be processed at the co-operative, this enabled even higher quantities to be produced which means that Celler de Capcanes now boasts the ability to produce vast amounts of competitively priced wine as well as smaller amounts at a higher quality.

The region of Catalunya has had vineyards running since the Middle-ages, now with some vines up to 100 years old. In Catalunya is the famous sub-region Priorat and neighbouring with Priorat is Capcanes. At Capcanes grapes are harvested from low yielding bush vines of indigenous grapes, such as, Garnacha, Cariñena and Tempranillo. They are famed for their production of high quality Kosher wines, which are made under the strict supervision of the Rabbi of Barcelona.

The grapes are vinified together in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, the maceration lasts for 12 days and allowed to undergo malo-lactic fermentation. 50% of the batch is aged in stainless steel tanks and 50% in lightly toasted, new, American and French oak barrels. The aging process lasts for 10 months after which they are then blended and aged for a further three months in tanks before bottling.

This medium, bright ruby red has ripe red cherry aromas. There are lots of fresh redcurrant and blackcurrant flavours underlined by a definite earthy minerality. It has a supple, elegant sweetness. The typical Garnacha fruitiness shines through but there are hints of tempranillo flora and toastiness from the oak on the finish. Extremely approachable and would compliment numerous dishes from beef to moussaka; perfect with tapas.
