A subtle splash of red, in an otherwise black and white world can be powerfully poignant. Like the heart balloon that the little girl let go in that Bansky piece or Eva Green's lipstick in Sin City. In fact, Frank Miller has always used a little red as a contrast to a minimalist back drop, it's incredibly impactful, shame he's a dangerously inconsistent director, did you see the 300 sequel? Yeah, no one did.
It is also something Champagne house Charles Heidsieck appreciates; on an elegant base of Chardonnay they splash lightly extracted Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier to give this wine an enticing coral-like appearance. While on the palate, notes of freshly picked strawberry, blood peach and apple blossom, harmonise with a suggestion of gingerbread and raspberry cheese cake.

Charles Heidsieck was founded in 1851 in Reims by the namesake of this prestigious Champagne house. The foundation of its modern fame rests on the unrivalled quality of its wines, which receive countless awards and accolades year after year. This success is attributable to the strength and depth of their winemaking team over the past three decades: Daniel Thibault, Regis Camus and Thierry Roset have between them been awarded 'Sparkling Winemaker of the Year' at the International Wine Challenge fifteen times. No other house has won more than twice. This winning philosophy has been inherited by the new chef de cave, Cyril Brun, who took over in 2015 following Thierry Roset's untimely death in October 2014.
In a world of large houses and luxury brands, it is reassuring that Charles Heidsieck, the smallest of all the grandes marques, is once again family owned and striving to build upon its already fabled reputation.
