Not far from the golden dwellings of St Emillion, Bordeaux lies the fair grounds of Chateau Canon. Growing grapes in arguably the best region in the world for the red grape Merlot. The Chateau's name suggests that it, perhaps, originated from a past owner- naval officer ..or pirate James Kanon. Their stunning 2008 displays floral and dried black currant aromas. Followed by a complex palate of blackberry, red cherry, restrained oak and forest undergrowth. We wonder that having an ex-privateer as the owner and having Canon in the name really can't be a coincidence. Maybe James couldn't give up the habit? After settling in this magnificent vineyard perhaps some dormant pirate sense told him to stick a canon in the name and fire a salvo across his neighbor's bows!
Chateau Canon is placed in the St Emilion appellation of Bordeaux, France. Its vineyards are composed of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. Producing full-bodied velvety reds. This chateau bares the local St Emillion quality rating of Premier Grand Cru Classe B. The property originated in the 1700s as part of the Clos St. Martin vineyards. A James Kanon, a man who apparently amassed his wealth from being a privateer, bought 13 hectares in 1760. It was since passed through the Fontemoing and Fournier families. In 1996 the luxury brand company Chanel bought the chateau. It is considered one of the best producers in the St Emilion appellation.
