Did you know that Geoffrey Chaucer came from a long line of Vintners, based in Ipswich and London? In fact, his family may have even been selling wine from this estate, founded as it was, in 1080. Although his major work was set on a journey to Canterbury, in many respects this wine captures the essence of Chaucer. There is a clear romance of nature; set along the beautiful Loire, that Chaucer had the pleasure of travelling and with the winery converting to organic winemaking; there is a respect for the French landscape. A trailblazer and sophisticated we have no doubt the great British Francophile would've been honoured to have a sip on this wine while scribbling out The Book of the Duchess. P.S. All our knowledge of the life and work of Geoffrey Chaucer comes from the 2001 film A Knights Tale and thus should not be quoted in your Medieval Literature PHD.

La Roulerie lies in the heart of the Layon region, at the top of a hill that dominates the Layon valley. With the estate dating back to the 11th century and the chateau built mid-15th, Roulerie’s terraced vineyards really come to relevance in a more recent time. In 1996, winemaker Philippe Germain’s father, Bernard (of the Bordeaux Germain-Sancrits), purchased Roulerie from famed chef Gaston Lenotre and they started producing stunning examples of wine. This historic estate is owned and managed by Philippe Germain and his wife Marie: their family has history in the region with his brother Thierry at Les Roches Neuves in Champigny and his father at Château de Fesles. They are committed to improving the wines in every way possible with organic certification planned for next year and an ongoing programme of vineyard expansion. Philippe has purchased part of the nearby Domaine de la Grande Brosse which adds another 18 ha of vineyard. Les Terrasses is immediately next to La Roulerie and named after the wide terraces on which the vines are planted.
