With Bordeaux it's all about getting off the beaten track. No doubt you could find a fine Michelin star restaurant just next to the Cathédrale Saint-André and the food would be exquisite, however you may have to sell your Rolex if you want seconds of the Escargot. The smart money finds a back-alley eatery, family run, that lacks any pretention but prepares mind blowing food at a quarter of the price of the Michelins.
It's the same with wine. 1st growth Grand Crus are probably lovely, we wouldn't know, we don't manage a hedge fund. Yet, for a fraction of the cost you can find wonderful wines from less high-profile regions, that offer high quality at a fraction of the cost. Such as Chateau la Grande Clotte Lussac, it offers ripe fruit notes of raspberry, blackberry and blackcurrant, with beautifully integrated spice and vanilla characters but doesn't require a second mortgage.
This vineyard was bought 2 years ago by a young French couple, who were formally making wine in Canada. They decided to start a new adventure and came back to their roots, in Bordeaux, and purchased this lovely property in Lussac Saint Emilion from the well renowned Michel Rolland (famous winemaker and consultant). A new dynamic was born here and the wine has gained more finesse and elegance than ever before. The reason: use of less new oak, picking at a different time during the maturing process, gentle extraction.
