It seems strange to suggest that a top end Bordeaux is a bargain. There are probably many things you associate Bordeaux fine wine with; unprecedented quality, chateau’s steeped in history and stuffy British auctioneers paying off their mortgage from a single sale of a 1945 first growth, but a bargain, surely not?

Well, the thing with Bordeaux’s ranking system of its fine wines, is it has remained almost completely unchanged since their classification in 1855. That means there’s some underrated wines out there, wines that had the classification taken place today, they would be a shoo-in for a Grand Cru Classe! Chateau Meyney is such a wine, rich and astonishingly complex, this Saint-Estephe is bursting with ripe black fruit flavours, fresh herbal aromas and a bed of vanilla, anise and cocoa. Bargain still feels like a strange descriptor? Shall we settle on amazing value?

Château Meyney is located in the wine appellation of St Estèphe and is owned by Domaines Cordier. The 49ha property produces on average 30,000 cases per year. Located in the east of the appellation, next to Château Montrose, Meney has a similar climate to that enjoyed by the Médoc: maritime, with the Gironde estuary and the Bay of Biscay combining to act as a climate regulator and the coastal pine forests sheltering the vines from the westerly and north-westerly winds.
