The legend of Vinus, the Heron, started on the Hérault River banks at the foot of Château Paul Mas in Pézenas. The story goes that this aptly named river bird forewent the fish in the Héraut in favour of feeding on the grapes grown in the valley. What started with a fondness became a fully-fledged passion and led to Vinus being able to correctly identify each grape variety grown on the estate just by smell; impressive, as we’re not even sure herons have noses.
After many years of study, Vinus became the first non-migratory bird to pass the Master of Wine certification, an extraordinary achievement that deserved significant celebration. Her family asked Vinus what wine she would like to drink to acknowledge such success. The answer was simple, as they sipped on Château Paul Mas Clos des Mures, acknowledging the splendid, weighty body and smooth tannins supporting a sensual dark fruit palate of blackcurrant, blackberries, dark cherry violet and cacao concluding with a long mineral finish, Vinus was remined of where her love for grapes came from!
