From the sunny southern slopes of St. Emilion Grand Cru, how appetisingly alliterative. Grown in a coveted part of Bordeaux, it may feel like that would be reason enough to buy a St. Emilion Grand Cru for less than a month's rent. Well, this astonishing wine also has the advantage of being from 2009; the King of 21st Century Bordeaux vintages. Perhaps that's premature given it's only 2017, nonetheless this is a truly fantastic right-bank Bordeaux with outstanding concentration, giving succulent flavours of ripe red plum, blackberry, cigar box and prune. One at a time please.
Château Simard is a Saint Emilion Grand Cru which belongs to the very famous Vauthier family, who also own the world-renowned Château Ausone. Chateau Simard has been classified as Saint Emilion Grand Cru from the 2008 vintage. Pauline Vauthier is in charge of the winemaking of Château Simard’s 40 hectares of vines. It has an enviable address on the sunny southern slopes of Saint Emilion. It has an excellent exposure and predominantly clay soil, mixed with sand and gravel. The blend each year reflects the vineyard's makeup of Merlot with small parcels of Cabernet Franc. The wine has attractive, upfront fruit with a fairly long finish that is drinking well presently but also could be cellared for a number of years.
