Clos La Gaffeliere St Emilion Grand Cru 2014
£34.00
More significant than that, it is also the home of excellent Saint Emilion Grand Cru wine, which has a luscious palate of tart red fruit, damson and dark cherries with a spicy backbone and a complex, savoury finish that’s so long it seems to be continually regenerating!
So, turns out the home of Time Lords is actually Gallifrey… There might be good wine there, but we’d stick with this Clos La Gaffeliere St Emilion Grand Cru to be honest.
Chateau la Gaffeliere, a 1st Growth since the beginning of St Emilion’s classification in 1959. The vine has been present on the lands of Château La Gaffelière since Gallo-Roman times, as demonstrated by the numerous mosaics discovered by Comte Léo de Malet Roquefort in 1969. The quality of these decorative elements confirms the richness of this place, called “le Palat” (Palatium = Palace).
The wine comes from an exceptional terroir, a “golden triangle” nested between the hills of Pavie and Ausone.
But a great terroir is nothing without the willingness of men. The family de Malet Roquefort has run the estate with passion for more than 3 centuries, with a single purpose: upgrading the vineyards whilst producing an amazing ageing wine.
Clos La Gaffelière is the 2nd wine of Chateau la Gaffeliere and was born in 1985, produced mainly from the young vines. The blend is of Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, whose percentage differs according to the quality of the vintage. It is a “wine for pleasure” with a 10-year potential ageing.
The work in the plots of Clos is the equal to the actions in the parcels for the first label: pruning, cover, de-leafing, green harvest, hand-picking.
In the cellar, the same technical gestures pace the successive stages of vinification. Unlike its brother, this wine ages only in one-year French oak barrels during 10 to 12 months.
Clos La Gaffelière has now a firm and recognized identity. First, it was exclusively proposed to private customers. Bordeaux negociants start to be interested in the vintage since 2000. It is now sold as a future wine to professionals.
