As toweringly impressive as the steeply-terraced vineyards that the Viognier grape grows, basking in long hours of northern Rhône sun, this wine has something majestic about it. The pitch-perfect peach, apricot and quince fill your lungs with ripe, orchard fruit goodness while the more nuanced, clean, mineral streak that you'd want from a seriously good Condrieu keep the picture in perfect balance. It's nothing short of a masterpiece. We sometimes find ourselves drawing up a stool and just gazing at the bottle, rapt.

The busy and bustling François Villard is a young man who will soon escalate into the highest echelons of Northern Rhône stardom, if he has not already done so. He could quite easily and happily lecture you for a day on the different soils, expositions and climates of his various vineyard plots, but it is his wines that really do the talking. At his tiny Domaine, no expense is spared in the production of his stunning wines from the lowering of yields in the vineyards to the purchase of top quality new wood barrels each year. The Condrieus are made in a late-picked, relatively full style whilst retaining a mouth-watering mineral intensity.

Made from Viognier grapes from three parcels of land on steeply-terraced land in Condrieu, which faces the Côte-Rôtie and solely produces white wine made from Viognier. François Villard’s 2013 ‘Les Terrasses du Palat’ is aged in oaks barriques for eight months, this is a generously-fruited, powerfully apricot-y yet minerally wine.
