Many say that for all the limitations of getting older, age has its compensations. Look at Arnold Schwarzenegger; in his youth he was a muscular curiosity, who's entire vocabulary consisted of "I'll be back" & "get to the chopper!" He was far too focused on churning out a vast amount of films, instead of making a few that were watchable. Now look at him, former Governor of California and one of the great American voices. He's like a slightly younger Noam Chomsky or an Austrian Foucault.
It's the same with grape vines; in their youth they're heavy lifters, over producing and potentially lacking in intensity. Yet when they get older they get much more sophisticated, seductive and serious. They essentially make the wine equivalent of Expendables 3; the gem in the crown of Arnie's acting career.

The Carignan vines at Domaine of the Bee are significantly older than Arnold, all are over 80 years old, with exceptionally low yields as a result. The subsequent wine is astonishingly intense and concentrated, bursting with big flavours of black berries bramble, supportive oak qualities and a slatey minerality. Forget Arnie, this is the Sir Ian McKellen of wines!

Domaine of the Bee was founded by Justin Howard-Sneyd MW in 2007, and has worked with Jean-Marc Lafage at his Maury winery since 2012. The Domaine wines all come from vineyards owned by Justin and his wife, and other wines (like Grenaschista) are made using fruit from vineyards owned by Domaine Lafage. Justin and Jean-Marc first worked together in South Africa in 1994 (the year of Nelson Mandela's election to the presidency). Justin has worked most of his life as one of the UK's best respected wine buyers, heading up the Waitrose wine team for many years, before throwing himself back into winemaking with his Domaine of the Bee project.

The terroirs of the Roussillon, especially the Agly Valley and the area around Maury hold some of France's greatest undiscovered potential. Old vines, dry-farmed with minimal intervention, and predominately organic fertilisation produce superbly concentrated flavourful fruit, and the winemaking doesn't need to be very elaborate to allow these grapes to express their extraordinary character.

This wine is made from a one-hectare vineyard of 80+ year-old Carignan vines. Bush vines are hand-tended, and shoot removal and green harvesting ensure a very well-balanced crop of fully ripe grapes. Hand harvested into small baskets and destemming without crushing to allow some intra-cellular fermentation to release colour prior to the full alcoholic fermentation. Slow temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel and a couple of 500L barrels before gentle pressing, and maturation in 2 x 500L barrels one new, and one 3 years old.
