Famille Cattin Dry Riesling 2017
£11.50
We bet Voegtlinshoffen wasn't exactly the first place the Wright brothers considered when conquering the airplane. However if they did, they would have discovered the birthplace of family-owned winery now belonging to Jacques and Jean Marie Cattin. They would then discover wines like this here Riesling, golden in colour with subtle notes of peach and a thirst-quenching dryness.
So if you're ever soaring over France, squinting down at ol' Voegtlinshoffen, take a moment to salute those Cattin brothers for their hard work, or better yet, pick up a bottle of this delicious Riesling and prepare to take flight!
For about for the past three centuries, the Cattin family have been living its love for Alsace wine. In 1978, Antoine's sons Jacques and Jean-Marie picked up the family baton and a new dynamic developed in the favourable economic situation of the 1980s and 1990s. In 25 years, the two brothers overhauled their winemaking plant entirely. There now stood two new winemaking storage facilities, a modern winery and packing equipment along with vineyards that now extended over close to 50 hectares. The two brothers also developed a business involving the purchase of grapes.
The Cattin Family harvests grapes from all over the Alsace appellation area. As a result, it benefits from all the qualities of the region and the combination of its terroirs when it makes its wine. The link with the terroir is made by the roots. The age of the vines, the grass and working the soil are crucial elements for root development. The Cattin family takes into account these factors when cultivating vines that are now over 60 years old.
The fermentation cellar is built below the presses, so that the juice flows into it by gravity, thus preventing the oxidation of must and protecting the aromas. For that same purpose, the temperature of the fermentation tanks is accurately controlled. Finally, the wine is aged in traditional wooden barrels, some of which are over a hundred years old. The range is sufficiently diverse to ensure that all can find something to their taste.
