You don’t have to be a detective in to realise that this Bergerac wine stands out from the crowd, making it a prime target. Dig a little further and you’ll also find (unless you’re more of a Poirot and already know your wines) that Bergerac can offer superb, great value wines, to rival those of its lofty neighbour, Bordeaux. With its intense floral aroma and an unusual grapefruit and citrus kick, this is one complex character that is quite the Pink Panther.

The Château de Thénac winery was built on the remains of a Benedictine priory dating back to 1109. The winery is situated to the east of Bordeaux in the Perigord region in Bergerac. The vines are aged between 30 and 45 years and grow at an altitude 150 to 200 metres, in a micro-climate that is cooler than Bordeaux. The limestone and clay soils in the vineyard are suited to creating white wines that are fresh and characterful.

The fruit concentration that this wine holds so well is due to the unusual weather in the vineyard. The season started late in 2012 which meant that the growing season started late. The extreme weather conditions meant that the berries stayed small and created a concentrated fruit flavour when fermented. The wine is aged on its lees which creates a soft mouth-feel.

This particular blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle and Semillon is visibly young; it has a straw yellow appearance with a hint of green. On the nose it is intensely floral, even slightly herbal, with notes of jasmine and citrus. Its high acidity balances well with its rich weight and flavours of white peach and apricot. It has a long and elegant finish.
