Merlot is sometimes prone to sulking. John Williams of Frog's Leap vineyards knows the secret to bringing her back to the festivities. Keep Merlot content. If she dosesn't grow in the happy place- clay. You'll get her classic party pout- nasty green flavours in the resulting wine. This grape likes 'cold feet and a warm body' Or in plain terms- put it in the right soil in a prime spot in the sun. Williams also loves the subtlety and restraint of Bordeaux. This approach combined with his careful attention to Merlots cordial demeanour gives us this utterly superb wine. Elegant and velvety texture, in harmony with raspberry fruits and fine grain tannins. If you keep the grape gleeful and it will give you marvellous Merlot!

John Williams founded Frog's Leap in 1981 and is also the winemaker. He formed his alongside Larry Turley at the site of the historic Adamson Winery, producing 700 cases of Sauvignon Blanc. When they started, Turley was a doctor and Williams was a winemaker at Spring Mountain vineyard. They took the winery into organic farming and made it the first Napa winery with certified organically grown grapes. They built up the winery in Saint Helena, California together until 1994, when John Williams took Frog's Leap to the Red Barn Ranch in Rutherford, California and Larry Turley established what is now Turley Wine Cellars. Frog's Leap features organically grown grapes and dry-farmed vineyards. Owner John Williams believes dry-farming results in stronger, healthier vines.
