Gonzalez Byass 'Apostoles' VORS 30 Year Old Solera NV
£30.00
If you're of a certain age you may remember a time when Cream Sherries ruled Britannia. You couldn't step into any licensed premises without seeing someone sipping a thick brown liquid out of a weird eggcup sized wine glass, sophisticated ay? If you're of a different age, that may have sounded like your Grandad regaling you with tales of wind-up televisions or whatever. Apostles is of the same idea as Cream Sherry, in that an aged sherry is lightly sweetened but that's really where the comparison end. A graceful Palo Cortado is blended with a powerful Pedro Ximenez and aged for more than 30 years. The wine is breath-taking, with concentrated dried fruit aromas combing with notes of caramel and mature wood. If wines like this keep coming over from Jerez, there's a good chance Sherry will conquer the UK once more.
Gonzalez Byass was founded in Jerez in 1835 by Manuel Maria Gonzalez. At the young age of 23 he decided to dedicate himself to the production and commercialisation of Sherry wines and spirits. In 1844 the first barrels of Tio Pepe were exported to London. Tio Pepe being named in homage to the uncle of the founder, Jose Angel. Then in 1855 the company's UK distributor Robert Blake Byass was made a partner in order to stengthen links with the UK, the number one market for Sherry wines. However nowadays the company is controlled by the Gonzalez family, now in its fifth generation./ Gonzalez Byass has since been dedicated to the production and commercialisation of quality Sherry wines and spirits. Gonzalez Byass has a special focus on the production of rare old wines that have resided in their ancient cellars for more than 30 years. these 'Soleras Exclusivas' can be considered the legacy of Jerez left to us by Gonzalez Byass. The Apostoles solera was created in 1862 in honour of Her Majesty Queen Isabella II of Spain when visiting the winery. A unique wine in Jerez being the only Palo Cortado blend of Palomino and Pedro Ximenez.
