We like to think of Pinot Grigio as the grape equivalent of the Brontë siblings. For there are distinct offshoots, each with their own name and style. Just how Emily wrote the wonderful Wuthering Heights, while Charlotte gave the world the era defining Jane Eyre and Anne... who... umm... she probably made the other two tea at some point, so she contributed to literature in her own way?

It's the same with Pinot Grigio (except for the obvious 3rd wheel) which is named as such in Northern Italy and is typically light, citric and incredibly easy drinking. Whereas in Alsace and some New World regions, the grape goes by Pinot Gris and is often much more floral and textual. Then we get to the best kept secret of the 3; Grauburgunder. Grown in Germany, wines such as this from Gysler, are some of the finest expressions in the world. With both beautiful finesse and elegance, while presenting a palate that has crisp notes of green apple, preserved lemon, dried acacia and baking spices. Given half the chance, we reckon this wine could knock out some sublime 19th century literature!

This is a family run winery, owned and operated by Alexander Gysler. The winery was built in 1750 and it was Alexander’s father, Gernot Gysler, who first started to focus on just wine, bottline the estates' first vintage in 1969. Alexander took over in 1999 and since then developed the winery to one the most consequent biodynamic farming wineries throughout the whole of Germany. His first vintage received an honorary award from the state. The aim of the Gysler winery is to create wines with individuality while reflecting typicity - each with their own true character, and from this special place only. Honest wines - with an origin and with a future. The change to controlled organic cultivation was made in 2004 – a logical step to producing wines with an authentic terroir character. Since then, the winery operates biodynamically, emphasizing compatibility with the wines, sustainable cultivation and responsible interaction with nature. Weingut Gysler is Demeter-certified – adhering to the world´s strictest control system for organic agriculture.
