Heumann Lagona Villany 2015
£14.00
"Are we Heumann or are we dancers?" We always thought they were odd lyrics, those ideas aren't mutually exclusive! We don't know if the Killers have noticed but Strictly Come Dancing isn't just a dressier Crufts; that's a person doing the Viennese Waltz not a handsome young German Shepherd (although if a German Shepherd were to ballroom dance it'd probably Waltz). You can be both a dancer and a human.
Just as you can be Heumann and an astonishing Hungary based winery. Want proof? Just try this wine, a classic Bordeaux blend with the addition of the local varietal Kekfrankos, the wine displays an elegant nose of sour cherries, dark forest berries, baking spices and tobacco that follows onto the palate backed by a great structure and well-integrated tannins. Now, just don't get us started on Mr. Brightside.
Heumann Winery is owned by Erhard & Evelyne Heumann a Swiss – German couple with an extraordinary dedication to wine. In 1995 they had the chance to lease a 40-year-old vineyard planted with Kékoportó (Blauer Portugieser) in Villány, the most famous red wine region in Hungary. This was the basis and starting point for their winery. Originally born by the desire to act as hobby vintners after 20 years of private occupation with the medium wine, volume, ambition level and especially quality have risen. The decision to produce wine not only as a side line, in their spare time but as a professional, full-time enterprise, was the logical step. Today their son also works on the vineyard who in 2008 has received his degree in oenology in Switzerland.
Heumann own several top vineyards (approx. 15 ha) in the winegrowing region of Villány-Siklós. Most of them are either south-exposed (Siklós, western part of the area) or situated on a plateau (Vókany hill). The area is regarded as Hungary’s best red wine region. Some call it the “Bordeaux of the East.” Soil is mainly loess and clay with a different content of limestone and dolomite. Climate is continental with Mediterranean influence – cold winters but relatively hot summers.
Over 90 % of the vineyards poses the Premium status of the DHC (Districtus Hungaricus Controllatus) Villány-Siklós. DHC is the first controlled designation of origin in Hungary and can be compared with the French AOC or Italian DOC). The DHC rules require et al a minimum planting density of 5000 vines/ha which we exceed with up to 7000 vines/ha.
