Communism has a lot to answer for! Sure, as a political ideology it spawned an unprecedented level of quality facial hair but other than that, there seems to be a lot of gulags, famine and poor winemaking practices. We’re going to say it, Ceaușescu was a bad dude!

The problem was that under most communist nations, quality was viewed as subversive, as the focus was purely on quantity; that’s what you want to hear from a winemaker right, quantity not quality? Thus, it's taken considerable time for premium wine production to return to Eastern European countries, something that the region was known for since the time of the Romans. The reputation of Romanian wine is however rocketing, there are some astonishing wines emerging from the country like Crama La Salina's Issa Rhein Riesling, with a clean, linear palate displaying flavours of green apples, lime kafir, apricot and a mineral, saline finish. If it wasn’t for Ceaușescu we could’ve been enjoying wines like this since the 60s, see, we told you he was bad.
"La Salina” Winery was born in 2011, in the heart of Transylvania, in an area with a strong vocation for white wines. The Valley of Aries has a specific terroir that comes with its own characteristics, prevalent in La Salina’s wines. Starting from the passion of two wine lovers, Simion Muresan and Claudiu Sugar, the winery aimed to rebuild the wine-growing area of the Durgau hills.

In 2014 La Salina had its first harvest and the first wines were Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Shortly after the debut, the winery won its first gold medal with their Sauvignon Blanc at the International Wine Contest Bucharest and the silver medal at The Balkans International Wine Competition. And this was only the beginning!
