We all need a little help from our friends, like Ringo Starr needed a little help from Lennon and McCartney to write his vocal tracks, to make him feel like a significant member of the band. Sorry, that was uncalled for; it’s far too easy to dig Ringo and we’re going to put a stop to it right here - Ringo, if you’re reading this we really liked ‘Octopus’s Garden!’

Despite the start of this metaphor, John Duval is more of a Lennon than a Ringo; a creative trailblazer for Australian winemakers, having worked for Penfolds for 29 years before starting his own label. It is John’s extensive knowledge of the Barossa Valley, plus a little help from his friends, that allows him to source the best quality fruit from the region, which leads to exceptional quality wines such as Entity Shiraz - Ripe, generous and silky with powerful aromatics of attractive blackberry, plum, savoury spice and a touch of (Sgt.) pepper.
John Duval is a legendary name in the Australian wine industry. After 29 years as a winemaker with Penfolds (including 16 years as chief winemaker), one of Australia's most famous wineries, John Duval started his own wine label in 2003.
Graduating in agriculture and winemaking in 1973 at Adelaide University, John then followed in the footsteps of some of the greats of Australian winemaking such as Max Schubert, the creator of Penfolds Grange and Don Ditter, another famous Penfolds winemaker who mentored him in the 1970s and early '80s.

John Duval was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and oversaw one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. During this era, he secured a number of awards for the company - Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and saw the 1990 Penfolds Grange named the Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995.

John sources fruit from long-time friends in the Barossa, all of whom own vineyards with vines aged from 50 to 100 years old. The wines are made with minimal intervention and showcase the best of the Barossa.
