Iniitially our assumption was that Colheita was english slang for complaining about nose numbingly cold weather. Back in the day the winters would cause embittered londoners to exclaim 'blimmin' eck! we need a coal heater!' Or just yelling miserably 'colheita!'.... In fact once we come clean -Colheita means 'harvest' in portuguese, is an aged tawny style port and one of the Portugal's greatest gifts to the world. Abunddant dried fruits, spicy notes and subtle vanilla certainly would warm up the the befrosted denizens of the thames river and beyond. So we aren't far from our creative interpretation after all.
Kopke claims the mantle as the oldest Port house in the market. This company has a special focus on the hallowed Tawny style of port. Wine making responsibilities are in the skilled hands of Carlos Alves . A native of the Douro born in 1982. Carlos studied agronomy at university, then mastered in oenology which led him to work for the Portuguese wine company Sogevinus. Here he has worked for the last 13 years and is now in charge of their port production at the Kopke estate. This company holds a vast store of vintage ports and they are world leaders in stocking the prized, aged tawny called Colheitas.
