Larry Cherubino Laissez Faire Fiano 2017
£20.50
A little skiffle band by the name of the Beatles sang "let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, whisper words of wisdom, let it be." Words of wisdom indeed, keep an eye on these young chaps because we reckon they could get pretty big!
When Larry Cherubino started work on his own winery, there was good chance he was humming 'Let it Be;' firstly, it's pretty catchy, secondly because 'let it be' is the ethos of Larry's winemaking approach. The fruit for the Laissez-Faire Fiano is handpicked and magicked into wine without the addition of inoculated yeasts, enzymes, sulphur or acid. The result is an 'o natural' wine with delicate aromas of quince, white figs, yellow peach and a subtle mineral finish. In another life, Paul McCartney would've made a fine vintner.
Edwina Cherubino is a fourth generation Western Australian. Her ancestors, the Egerton-Warburton’s, migrated from England and settled Frankland River in the mid 1800’s. Not just settlement pioneers, they planted the first vines on the banks of the river in 1875.
Unlike Edwina, Larry Cherubino is a first generation Australian. With his uncles and aunts pressing grapes on their farms and in their backyards, and his own family at one time having a small vineyard, it’s clear where his interest in wine originated. Larry & Edwina met in 1994, the same year Larry graduated from horticulture.
Larry has been head winemaker at Houghton and a traveling consultant. He designed vineyards and wineries, and work took him overseas to New Zealand, USA, France, Italy and South Africa.
The Cherubinos purchased their first parcel of land in Frankland River in 2004 with dreams of planting their own vineyard. It was a small parcel that had originally been part of a large, historic land holding called Riversdale. A few years later they had the opportunity to buy the neighbouring vineyard, and acres of prime river and vineyard country. They didn’t hesitate as they knew its potential.
Larry Cherubino Wines began in their spare room in 2005 with the release of one wine. A lot has happened since. The range has grown, and along the way, they’ve been listed as Winery Of The Year by respected wine critics such as James Halliday and Matt Skinner.
