This wine is Oddbins contribution to Joseph Campbell's Monomyth theory. The idea that across the world, all great stories are being retold in every language and in every culture. On a recent trip to South Africa our buyers, lost and thirsty, found a mystic on the side of the road. She told them what they seek can be found at the foothills of a magnificent mountain range. After days of searching, they stumbled upon a 600-acre vineyard. Weary, they asked for a glass of wine and after tasting one of the finest Viogniers ever to touch their lips, they realised they had been rejuvenated. They had found the fountain of youth! Not really, but they did stumble on this wonderfully balanced Viognier, maybe myths are real!

Berkeley educated Samantha O'Keefe left her native California and an executive TV job in search of a simpler life. She settled into her own sliver of paradise in the form of a 600-acre, former dairy farm in Greyton, South Africa. Tucked into the foothills of a dramatic mountain range at the bottom of Africa is Lismore Estate Vineyards. Samantha O’Keefe’s passion, combined with vines planted at 300 meters, chilled by the winter snow and nourished by the African summer sun, produces classically cool climate wines which are rich, complex and lovingly hand crafted.

The vines are grown on rose-quartz soils in Elgin, which is a cool, high altitude plateau. Grapes were picked and whole bunch pressed, slowly extracting the juice at a rate of 550 litres per tonne. The juice was settled for 48 hours and was racked into 225 litre Burgundian barrels, for fermentation and maturation. The wine was left on the lees for nine months with regular battonage or lees stirring for the first two months. This expressive Viognier seduces you with the beautiful perfume and honeysuckle and orange blossom and a textured palate of apricot, kiwi and pineapple. A wonderful accompaniment to Asian inspired cuisine, lamb tagines with apricots or rich shellfish dishes such as seared scallops and grilled lobster.
